Fox Cities Moms Run This Town/She Runs This Town

By Ashley Rossmeissl

Running is definitely not easy, but it has taught me some incredible lessons, helped me build an amazing running community, offered me therapy sessions and given me some of my best and closest friends.

My name is Ashley Rossmeissl. I’m the founder of the Fox Cities Moms Run This Town/She Runs This Town (MRTT/SRTT) chapter. We’re a part of the national group of Moms Run This Town/She Runs This Town, a group where there are only two stipulations:

  1. You are female
  2. You run/walk

I started MRTT/SRTT in May 2016. At that time, I had a four-year-old and a two-year-old, but I felt like I was missing something. I wanted to meet new women while doing one of the things I loved most: running. I reached out to one of my oldest friends, who lives in Washington, D.C., and told her that I  needed some running buddies! She told me about the MRTT group she was a part of in D.C. and when I looked into it, I realized the Fox Cities didn’t have its own local chapter, so I decided to get one started.

Using the power of social media and word of mouth, as well as convincing my closest friends to join in on this adventure, the intial response was very positive. We soon found that we were not the only ones who craved a running group. In just five months we had 600 members and 12 committee members to help me with planning of events and training for runs.

Today, we’re a community of more than 3,500 ladies, with a committee of 14 members.

The one event Fox Cities MRTT/SRTT has participated in since its beginning is the Community First Fox Cities Marathon presented by Miron Construction. Last year, I ran the full marathon in the extremely hot temperatures. The one thing about this particular race that made it possible and helped me push through the pain and the heat was the community support. Every single block, whether it was MRTT/SRTT members, course organizers or just people who lived along the race route, people were there cheering you on. You never felt alone, it was unbelievable.

This race aligns perfectly with the value that MRTT/SRTT puts on running. We create a race community that gives women support to run, just like the support runners receive along the course. Many times women, and moms especially, will say they don’t have time to run or that they feel guilty for taking the time away from their families to run. We provide a community of women that are going through those same experiences. Running becomes almost a therapy session for these ladies and something they look forward to every day.

We have ladies that run at all different times of the day and in all different conditions. Not only do we run to stay healthy and set a good example for our loved ones about fitness, we also train together as a community of women runners.

This year we’re teaming up with the Fox Cities Marathon to help us train for the big day. We will start training in June and we will run every Saturday morning, beginning at 5:30 or 6 a.m. MRTT/SRTT members will run the Fox Cities Marathon route, and members from the marathon race team have even agreed to set up water stations along the course to keep runners stay safe while we train. While some runs will be on the actual course route, or as close to it as we can get, others will be within different cities in the Fox Valley, but all will be focused around the Fox Cities Marathon.

The special thing about training like this is that everyone gets a chance to partner up with someone, so no one ever runs alone. These events are completely free for any ladies who would like to join.
